Delray Beach, FL (February 28, 2021) - A 75-year-old man lost his life in a bicycle crash that took place in Delray Beach on Friday afternoon. The incident occurred just after 12:00 p.m. on Lyons Road.
According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, Neil J. Goldman was riding his bicycle southbound along the shoulder of Lyons Road. At the same time, a 2019 Lexus RX350 was also traveling southbound on Lyons. For unknown reasons, the driver failed to maintain their land and collided with Goldman, knocking him off his bicycle. Goldman was later pronounced dead at the accident scene. It is not clear whether the driver remained at the scene following the crash. No other injuries were reported.
An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, there were 6,664 bicycle crashes in Florida in 2019 ad 156 fatalities reported as a result. Although they are not as common as other types of accidents, a bicycle crash is usually more dangerous and deadly. Bicyclists are very vulnerable to being seriously hurt or killed when they are involved in a crash. Many bicycle accidents in Florida occur due to the behaviors of negligent drivers.
