St. Johns County, FL (March 1, 2021) - A bicyclist was killed in a crash that took place in St. Johns County on Sunda morning. The incident happened on U.S. Highway 1.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Dr. Troy Manz, of Indiana, was competing in the annual "Sea to Sea" bicycle race when his bike was hit by a car driven by a 27-year-old man from St. Augustine. Maz was taken to a hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Two women were also struck by the same car and suffered serious injuries. An investigation into the accident is ongoing at this time.
There is no word on whether any charges are expected to be filed. No further information is available.
Florida ranks as the most dangerous state in the nation when it comes to bicycle crashes. Each year, more than 100 people on average are killed in Florida bicycle accidents. Bicyclists are very vulnerable to suffering serious injuries when they have been struck by a vehicle. Bicyclists are often hurt or killed in crashes involving negligent motorists.
