Lakewood Ranch, FL (January 7, 2021) - The Florida Highway Patrol responded to the scene of a vehicle crash in Lakewood Ranch on Thursday morning. The crash happened at the intersection of Lakewood National Parkway and Arnie Loop at approximately 9:00 a.m.

According to a report, an 18-year-old Bradenton man was traveling on Arniel Loop when he came to a stop sign with Lakewood National Parkway. As he made a right turn onto Lakewood National, he struck the 73-year-old bicyclist, also from Bradenton. The bicyclist suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to a local hospital for treatment. The driver was not hurt in the crash. Troopers say that the woman was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. Neither the bicyclist nor the driver was identified.

There is no word on charges at this time.

Bicycling is a popular activity in Florida, given the year-round temperate climate and many Floridians enjoy riding their bicycles for exercise. This is not without risk, however, as more than 90% of Florida bicycle accidents result in some type of injuries for the bicyclist, many of them serious injuries. Sadly, a large number of Florida bicyclists will be hurt in a crash that was not their fault.
