St. Johns County, FL (October 10, 2020) - The Florida Highway Patrol was called to the scene of a fatal head-on crash in St. Johns County on Friday, October 9th. The crash occurred around 8:15 p.m. on State Road 16.
According to troopers, a 16-year-old was driving a sedan when he entered the intersection at Francis Road. Troopers say that the teen's vehicle collided with a pickup truck in the intersection after failing to yield the right of way to the truck. The teenage driver sustained serious injuries while a 17-year-old passenger in the vehicle died at the scene. The driver of the truck was not injured in the collision. The crash caused SR 16 to be closed in both directions while troopers investigated the accident. The road later reopened for motorists.
There is no additional information regarding the crash available at this time.
Tragically, more than 3,000 people were killed in Florida car accidents last year. A fatal car accident can occur at any time and, in fact, fatal crashes are reported on Florida's streets and highways about once every three hours. Unfortunately, many of those killed in these crashes were innocent victims who were simply in the wrong place and the wrong time when the crash occurred.
We wish to extend our thoughts and condolences to those affected by this tragic crash on State Road 16 in St. Johns County.
