Umatilla, FL (October 18, 2020) - Police responded to the scene of a fatal car accident in Umatilla early Saturday morning. The crash crash was reported around 2:15 a.m. along County Road 42.

According to Cpl. Crystal Sollazo with the Florida Highway Patrol, a female driver was operating a pickup truck eastbound on County Road 42 when she entered a curve. For unknown reasons, her vehicle left the eastbound lanes and collided head-on with an SUV traveling westbound on CR 42. The driver of the pickup truck suffered critical injuries and died at the scene. The SUV driver, also a female, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported in serious condition. Neither of the women has been identified at this time.

Troopers are still looking into the crash as the investigation is ongoing. There is no additional information available.

Fatal car accidents take place in Florida approximately once every three hours. In 2019, 3,000 people tragically lost their lives in car accidents in our state and nearly 250,000 were hurt. These numbers help underscore the dangers that are faced by motorists each time they are on our roadways. While no one ever expects to be seriously hurt or killed in a crash, the reality is that no motorist is ever safe from the possible effects of a collision.

We wish to extend our thoughts and condolences to those affected by this tragic fatal accident in Umatilla.
