North Fort Myers, FL (September 10, 2020) - A motorcyclist was killed in a crash that took place in North Fort Myers on Thursday, September 10th. The crash happened on US 41 at the intersection with Laurel Drive.

The Florida Highway Patrol reports that a 50-year-old man was traveling on US 41 when he came to an intersection with a green light in his direction of travel. At the same time, a 38-year-old woman from Cape Coral was traveling southbound when she came to the same intersection with a flashing yellow light in her lane of travel. The woman made a left turn in front of the oncoming motorcycle, causing the two to collide. 

The motorcyclist sustained critical injuries and died at the crash scene. There were no other injuries reported in the accident. 

The Lee County Sheriff's Office is investigating the crash at this time. No additional information is available. 

A motorcycle accident in Florida can, and often does, result in serious injuries and even death in the worst-case scenario. Last year in our state, about 80% of motorcyclists involved in a traffic accident suffered an injury. Approximately 15% of Florida motorcycle crashes are fatal, a number that far exceeds the percentages of fatalities in other crashes.
