LaBelle, FL (November 10, 2020) - A moped driver was killed in a crash that took place in LaBelle on Tuesday, November 10th. The crash took place on State Road 80 near Phillips Road.

The Florida Highway Patrol reports that the victim was driving the moped on State Road 80 when he was hit from behind by a sedan. Both the moped driver and his passenger were thrown from the bike following the crash. The moped driver, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger was taken to Lehigh Regional Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The 30-year-old driver of the sedan was not hurt in the accident. 

The crash is under investigation at this time. There is no word on whether any charges are expected.

Mopeds and motorcycles can be a dangerous mode of transportation. Each year, moped and motorcycle crashes in Florida account for about 15 to 20 percent of all reported fatal accidents in our state. This is despite the fact that these vehicles account for less than 5% of all registered motor vehicles in our state. Moped riders have little protection from the force and impact of a serious crash and can be at much greater risk than other motorists when they are involved in crashes.
