Bal Harbour, FL (August 23, 2020) - A teenage bicyclist was killed in a hit-and-run accident that took place in Bal Harbour on Saturday, August 22nd. The crash occurred around 6:00 p.m. in the 10200 block of Collins Avenue near the Bellini condominiums.

The Miami-Dade Police Department responded to the accident scene just after the incident occurred. According to officials, the teen was riding a bicycle westbound when he was hit by a silver Kia sedan that was traveling northbound on Collins. Paramedics arrived and airlifted the boy to Ryder Trauma Center where he was later pronounced dead from his injury.

The Kia driver fled the scene and was last seen turning west onto 163rd Street. The car is believed to have damage to its front end and windshield and police are still looking for the suspect at this time. 

Each year in Florida, more than 100 people are tragically killed in bicycle accidents across our state. A Florida bicycle accident poses a great risk to the rider, who has very little protection from the force of the crash. Bicyclists are often thrown from their bikes following impact, which also increases the chances of being seriously injured. Sadly, in many cases, bicyclists are killed when they are struck by negligent drivers and the crash would have been preventable if the driver had exercised basic care and caution.
