Sarasota, FL (November 22, 2020) - A boy is dead following a boating crash on Saturday in Sarasota Bay. The collision took place around 11:30 a.m. near the Ringling Causeway.

According to officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, two boats collided with one another just north of the Ringling Causeway. The boats were part of a youth club sailing practice at the time of the collision. The Sarasota Police Department, along with the Sarasota County Fire Rescue, and FWC all responded to the crash scene. The boy was rushed to a local hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. There is no word on whether anyone else was hurt in the collision and officials have not said how the accident occurred.

The Ringling Causeway was closed for nearly two hours as investigators worked at the scene. An investigation remains ongoing. There is no additional information available at this time.

Florida is home to many bodies of water and boating is a favorite activity for many people in our state. With this, however, comes the risks associated with being on the water. In 2018, Florida led the nation in reported boating accidents with 607. Of this number, there were 57 deaths and nearly 300 injuries. Boaters should always remember to exercise care and caution and should follow all laws and safety regulations to avoid the occurrence of a serious and potentially life-changing incident.
