Jacksonville, FL (November 22, 2020) - A man was killed in a pedestrian accident in Jacksonville on Saturday night. The incident took place around 10:15 p.m. in the downtown area at the intersection of Union and Ocean Streets. 

According to police, the man was crossing the street when he was struck by a vehicle. The pedestrian, described as a black male in his 40s or 50s, was struck down in the roadway during the collision. He was rushed to a local hospital following the accident but he later succumbed to his injuries. The driver involved in the accident remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. There were no other injuries reported as a result of the accident. Police have not released any information on potential charges relating to the crash.

An investigation is underway at this time and no further information is available.

Each year on average, more than 500 people lost their lives in Florida pedestrian accidents. The rates of serious injury and death in pedestrian crashes are higher than crashes involving other types of individuals and vehicles. Pedestrians are so vulnerable because they have no protection from the force and impact of a crash. A pedestrian accident in Florida takes place very suddenly, often without time for the driver or pedestrian to react in order to avoid the crash. This frequently results in a catastrophic outcome.
