Gainesville, FL (August 10, 2020) - The Gainesville Police Department responded to the scene of a fatal hit-and-run crash on NE 15th Street early Monday morning. The crash took place around 12:15 a.m. in the 2400 block of the roadway.
According to reports, a woman was riding a scooter on 15th Street when she was hit by a vehicle. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene shortly after the impact. When rescue workers arrived, they found the female victim suffering from a head injury and struggling to breathe. She was rushed to Shands Hospital where she was later pronounced dead. Her identity has not been released at this time.
Following a search, police located the driver who has been identified as 23-year-old Latesia E. Fisher. Fisher was arrested and charged with DUI manslaughter, leaving the scene of a crash involving death, and no operator's license. She was being held at the Alachua County Jail with no bond allowed.
There are no further details regarding the crash at this time.
Hit-and-run crashes in Florida are frequently a very serious event for the accident victim. These types of accidents have become quite common across our state, accounting for about 25% of all reported crashes. Last year, there were more than 105,000 hit-and-run accidents reported, with many of them resulting in severe injuries and even death for the victims. In many cases, a driver will flee the scene in an attempt to avoid responsibility knowing that their actions caused a serious crash to occur.
