Venice, FL (December 15, 2020) - Police in Venice responded to the scene of a deadly wrong-way crash in the city on Monday, December 14th. The crash occurred on I-75 around 10:45 p.m.
According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, a 37-year-old Punta Gorda woman was driving a Hyundai Santa Fe southbound in the northbound lanes of I-75 when she collided head-on with a Nissan Altima traveling northbound. The 21-year-old driver of the Nissan was taken To Sarasota Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. A passenger in his vehicle suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The driver of the Hyundai was not injured in the crash.
There is no information on the identities of the victims at this time and police have not said if any charges are expected to be filed. No additional information has been released.
A fatal car accident takes place in Florida about once every three hours. While this number may seem high, it underscores the dangerousness of Florida's roadways and serves as a reminder to all drivers to exercise appropriate care and caution when traveling on the roadways.
