Fort Myers, FL - Two Hurt in DUI Crash on Alico Road

Fort Myers, FL (January 15, 2021) - Two vehicles were involved in a crash involving an impaired driver in Fort Myers on Thursday. The crash took place on Alico Road near U.S. Highway 41.

Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol were called and arrived at the scene just after the crash occurred. According to a report, a 21-year-old male was driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of Alico Road. The man's car collided head-on with a second vehicle driven by a 41-year-old female. Both drivers were transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries following the crash. Neither driver has been identified at this time. Following an investigation, police charged the 21-year-old driver with DUI.

No further details have been released at this time.

In 2017, Florida experienced 5,125 alcohol-related crashes. This number equates to about 14 crashes per day in which drivers are drinking or under the influence of alcohol or some other substance. Of the number of crashes, about 350 fatalities were reported. Drunk driving crashes are almost always caused by the negligence of the impaired driver. Being impaired slows reaction time and diminishes the capability of drivers to appreciate the risks of driving, often resulting in injuries to innocent motorists and others on the roadway.
