Keep these things in mind in the event of a crash:

1. Ensure your safety and the well-being of those around you:

• Are you and your passengers okay?
• Contact the police and call for an ambulance if necessary.
• Is your car in a safe location? If not, could you safely move it to a better location?
• Check to see if others need help.

2. Be careful what with what you say:

• Do not talk to anyone about the accident other than emergency personnel.
• Never accept blame or fault for the accident. You may be unaware of all factors that contributed to the accident (did a tire blowout, was the driver of the other car texting, etc…).
• Stay calm and avoid escalating the situation by saying the wrong thing.
• Do not talk to the insurance adjuster of the at fault vehicle without talking to an attorney first.

3. While waiting for help to arrive, take note of important information:

• If possible, take pictures of the scene, the cars involved, obstructions, skid marks.
• Collect name, address, driver’s license number, date of birth and insurance information from all other involved drivers.
• Write the name, address, phone and email from all passengers and witnesses at the scene.
• Do any of the witnesses have a dash cam? Ask them to email you footage if it captured the crash.
• Note any surveillance cameras that may have recorded the incident at the scene.

4. Cooperate with police and emergency personnel:

• Confirm the officer writes an official accident report and ask how to get a copy. Ensure its content is accurate.
• Ask for the officer’s name, badge number and contact information.
• If you are treated at the scene, get the EMT’s and/or the hospital’s contact information.
• If your car is towed, get the towing company’s contact information.
• Unless law enforcement has reported the accident, Florida law states you have 10 days report the accident, noting if: there are injuries involved, a driver was intoxicated or under the influence of drugs, and/or there are property damages over $500.

5. After the accident, seek help:

• See your doctor and get medical treatment. The shock of a collision my hide injuries, aches and pain for hours, days and even weeks.
